West Aurora School District #129 kicked off the 2019-2020 school year with a new tradition, the presentation of a West Aurora Challenge Coin.

Challenge coins, which began as a military tradition, have become a widely recognized way of showing membership and boosting morale. West Aurora has minted a limited number of coins that will be presented to those leaders in the West Aurora School District and community who personify commitment, courage, excellence, and integrity.

During his all-staff address today, Superintendent Dr. Jeff Craig unveiled the district’s theme of moving from challenges to success. He explained that receiving a West Aurora Challenge Coin “was meant to instill pride, honor a person for a special achievement, or acknowledge outstanding performance over time.  It is a symbol of respect.”

The first-ever recipients of the coins were two West Aurora alumni, Aurora Police Chief Kristen Ziman and Mr. Neal Ormond III. “Our recognition today is one way to show our respect for Chief Ziman’s outstanding representation of our district, our city, and her demonstrated leadership during our times of challenge and struggle,” Craig stated. “We are proud to claim her as one of our own.”

Dr. Craig continued by saying that, “Mr. Ormond is being recognized for his leadership through the many challenges our district has faced over time and his passion for the students and the opportunities for our district. We are in the presence of a legend in West Aurora Schools.”
